Representation Isn't a Slogan — It's Operational Intelligence

Throughout my career I've been deliberate about mentoring and placing leaders of color and leaders with disabilities into transit roles. Not as a soft values position — as a practical one. Because of what representation actually does for the operation.
Understanding the Customer Base You Serve
In paratransit, the customer base is, by definition, a population of people with disabilities. When those customers never see anyone like themselves in leadership, it's very hard for them to believe they're truly understood.
People with disabilities can be very effective, inspiring leaders. And they can demonstrate to customers that they know exactly what those customers need — because they have the same needs themselves. That builds incredible credibility for a board or an executive team.
"That's not a diversity statement. That's operational intelligence."
Key Executive Takeaways
- Representation builds credibility with the customer base you actually serve.
- Conventional wisdom underestimates the leadership abilities of people with disabilities.
- An organization understands its customers better when led by people who share their experience.
